Wellbeing and Creativity

Creativity has always been a big part of my life. From my earliest memories of cereal box fish in playgroup, to my latest intricate cross-stitch project, each experience of making something has brought me a lot of pleasure.

My primary school was well-equipped for regular art sessions, ranging from sewing to colouring, even a gardening and nature club!

I believe craft comes in many forms; below are some ideas for you to get inspired;

  • appreciating the arts (visiting a gallery)
  • gardening and nature
  • music (listening, singing, playing an instrument)
  • reading and writing
  • fashion design
  • teaching a craft to somebody else
  • chef/catering
  • media
  • needlework
  • papercraft
  • so much more!

Since leaving school and suffering with anxiety and panic attacks, I’ve found arts and craft to be an essential part of my life. When I sit down to craft, my thoughts turn to the project in front of me, rather than the swirling worries of the day. I know that the end product will be something I feel proud of and want to share with others, improving my confidence and self-worth.

My personal range of creativity varies hugely, from singing, nature and sewing, to cross-stitch, die-cutting and card-making! I find it also helps me to express my emotions to engage in a variety of crafts, music especially.

There has long been a connection with positive mental health and arts&crafts and it’s never been easier to get into being creative, with magazines I local newsagents, shops such as hobbycraft, and my favourite TV channel, CreateAndCraftTV!

Below is some of my ideas on how to start your own personal journey or even to add to it:

  • Sing along to your favourite song 🎶
  • invest in a plant, such as a succulent, which are easy to care for
  • look out at nature, keeping a diary of what you see
  • write a funny story
  • random doodling in a notebook
  • make a scrapbook page of real photos, rather than a Facebook post
  • read a favourite book all over again
  • redecorate a room
  • buy a craft magazine that comes with a free kit to get going
  • plan a new meal
  • arrage a bunch of flowers
